One of the fiercest rivalries in Italian and world football reignites on Monday night, as the Eternal City comes to a standstill when its leading two sides meet in a game as important for the side’s seasonal ambitions as it is for their and their fans’ pride.

The form book usually gets thrown out in any cross-city encounter, and the Rome derby is no different. However, it must be noted that Roma have undergone a rejuvenation of sorts since Aurelio Andreazzoli took over from Zdenek Zeman in February, with their defeat last week at the hands of Palermo being their first in six games.

Lazio, who have won the last three encounters between these two sides, including their 3-2 victory earlier this season in November, have seen a promising start to their Serie A campaign slip into a steady decline over the last few months. The Rome derby is sandwiched in between Lazio’s Europa League quarter-final against Turkish side Fenerbahce, who they will face at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday after going down 2-0 in controversial manner in the first leg only three days ago.

Roma themselves have an important cup clash next week, in an Italian Cup semi-final against Inter, which should they win would set up a tantalising Italian Cup final derby with Lazio, who booked their place in the title game earlier in the season at the expense of Juventus.

But all focus for both teams will be on Monday night’s game, as the slim three point league difference between these two sides demands. A Champions League berth is looking increasingly unlikely for either of the two teams, but with competition still strong for the remaining Europa League places, city bragging rights won’t be the only thing up for grabs.

Ever constant Francesco Totti will lead the attack for the ‘home’ side, with Erik Lamela likely to be given a free role behind him, in the absence of Pablo Osvaldo, who misses the game through suspension. Miroslav Klose’s two month absence has been a big blow to Lazio’s ambitions, and though he returned to action last week, Vladimir Petkovic will have to decide whether he has the requisite match fitness to be able to carry a full 90 minutes in a game of this importance and intensity.
